  • Essay / Pros and Cons of Stricter Gun Control Laws - 1054

In an effort to prevent mass shootings and violent crime, the United States government has begun passing stricter gun control laws. gun control and plans to adopt more. As the media constantly reports about crimes and shootings, people become frightened and look for solutions to prevent these problems. Stricter gun laws may seem like a good solution to the problem, but in reality that is not the case. The new gun control laws put in place by the United States government are unconstitutional and will not work. Not only do most ordinary citizens disapprove of new gun control laws, but the sheriffs who are the primary law enforcement officials in a given area also disapprove of these laws. . Two laws in particular caused three hundred and forty sheriffs to take a stand against them. “340 sheriffs have publicly stated that they will not enforce gun laws they believe are unconstitutional” (Williams 1). The laws that caused this reaction were that only magazines with a capacity of fifteen rounds or less could be sold legally and that now people wishing to purchase firearms had to pay for their own background checks. Sheriff John Cooke, one of the men who refused to enforce the new laws, called them “knee-jerk, knee-jerk reactions that are unenforceable” (1). If the government wants to try to enforce these laws, it will violate several amendments, including the second one which allows people without criminal records to carry a firearm. The only way for an officer to know if people are following the laws would be to take their gun and inspect it, which would prevent the Fourth Amendment which protects against illegal carrying...... middle of paper ... . .it’s the same fear. Just because an idea seems good at first doesn't mean it's a good solution. As they say, you can't always judge a book by its cover. Gun control laws seem like the perfect solution to the gun crime epidemic that has ravaged the United States, but that is not the case. There are actually several problems with the laws. Some people want these laws because they think they will stop crime, but in reality, it is quite the opposite. If law-abiding people own guns, they can help prevent crime. If these laws were passed, they could not be enforced because they violate several amendments to the constitution. That being said, this would mean the laws would be unconstitutional. Ordinary citizens aren't the only ones who feel this way. Hundreds of sheriffs join fight against new gun control laws, agreeing with many who say they are unconstitutional..
