  • Essay / Jazz and Political Connections - 1028

Jazz is a genre that we have been studying in recent weeks. During these weeks I acquired new knowledge that interested me in this genre. I never considered jazz a political style of music, nor did I know that there were songs with political messages. Discovering that these different songs and jazz have a certain political style aspect intrigued me to write about this genre. Through the many artists and songs we have studied about this genre, jazz has incorporated political styles into the genre in several ways. . Moments in history and events that occurred in the past are ways in which jazz musicians have incorporated political styles into their music. For example, racism has been a major problem throughout history and has affected the lives of many African Americans. Billie Holiday was able to highlight this tragic enslavement of African-Americans and describe how they were treated in the 1920s. Strange Fruit, a poem by Abel Meeropol, later taken up by Billie Holiday and transformed into a song, is one ways in which jazz has integrated political discourse. This song describes the lynching of African Americans in the South and a protest against the inhumanity of racism. Billie Holiday singing this song and presenting this type of musical lyric to her audience raises the political issue of racism and the inhumane treatment they received. She was able to inform people of what really happened to African Americans at the time and is able to tell the story of what many African Americans had to endure. When we talk about racism, it is only a brief overview of the segregation between whites and blacks. He doesn't really go into detail about the beatings and punishments they suffered. S...... middle of paper ...... classic songs like Strange Fruit and Fables of Faubus because of the political issues they discuss. It's good to hear songs that tell about events from the past. They can be very informative and enrich the musical by telling a story. I believe that giving music a political subject matter has enhanced musical style because music can illustrate a narrative or tell a story, encourage a certain emotional response in the audience, and even communicate something that is not shown. I liked learning jazz because it provokes different emotions when you listen to it and I appreciated the different instrument sounds found there: saxophone, trumpet, guitar, harmonica, etc. Jazz is an interesting genre and music that contains political connections is fascinating to listen to. Jazz is a genre I will continue to study and find more artists and songs to listen to as well..
