Have you ever wanted to integrate? Well, this man did it. From the streets of New York to the hills of Los Angeles came Harry Lockhart. A man who desires to fit in with people who don't want him, a man who pretends to be something he's not, and a man who strives to have "the girl who has fled." All because he's new to Los Angeles. It's a relationship comedy wrapped in sharp talk and gunfire, a triumphant return for Black and one of best films of the year." (E. Russell) a film that incorporated all of these things and more. It's a film filled with dark humor, witty commentary, action, and even romance. Harry Lockhart has a great desire to fit in with people who want absolutely nothing to do with him. In one scene in the film, Harry approaches a group of people attending a party and lights a cigarette; the group walks away with a look of disgust on their faces. Throughout the film he tries to make a lot of sarcastic comments, to make people believe that he is a suave and witty guy. Harry is kind of a loser who might be well-liked if he didn't try so hard to earn people's friendship and respect. Harry fought with "Gay" PerryVanshrike, the private detective, on the roof of his hotel. Perry told Harry that he wasn't Harry's friend, and all this time Harry thought they were friends. Harry is seen as something of a loser in Los Angeles and no matter how hard he tried to be "cool" or fit in, no one would accept him into his peer group. Although in the end he ends up becoming friends with Perry and even his detective partner and begins to fit in with the whole LA party scene. Harry in the film also tries to fit in by pretending to be many things he is not. At the very beginning of the movie, he's on the run from the police and he accidentally walks into an audition for acting and passes, so they hired him as an aspiring actor, which was again a lie. Right before meeting Harmony Faith Lane, his high school crush, at the bar, he meets a pretty woman who asked him what he did for a living and he responded with the answer; "I'm a detective.
