Essay / An Assessment of God the Almighty - 1921
For this course we were given three different books to help us develop our understanding of the doctrine of God in the Christian faith and the Muslim faith. Two of the books focused on the two faiths individually, and the third explained how a Christian could explain and understand the Muslim faith from their perspective. The advantage of having all three works is that there is comprehensive coverage of all topics, including a valuable perspective from an Islamic scholar. Evaluation of God the AlmightyIn God the Almighty: Power, Wisdom, Holiness, Love author Donald Bloesch offers a level of study of the attributes of God. It is clear in its approach to theology as being "a witness to the mighty acts of God in past history." Dr. Bloesch, as a professor of theology, tends to use a more academic approach in his writing, forcing the reader to slow down and examine his text carefully. He does not simplify the deep complexities of God, nor does he attempt to feed the reader with his own personal theology. Leaving room for personal interpretation, Dr. Bloesch presents various perspectives. This includes presenting them through Hellenistic, literal theology and other philosophical understandings. Overall, the text is effective in its elements but sometimes rich in words. The driving force behind this work is Bloesch's determination to show God not only as loving, powerful and friendly, but as completely holy.
