  • Essay / Diabetic Neuropathy - 1981

Diabetic neuropathy is a group of neurological disorders caused by nerve damage resulting from the effects of type one and type two diabetes. There are several types of neurological diseases, each affecting each individual differently. Each disorder has its own symptoms, prognosis and risks. It is important that the diabetic patient receives adequate education from their doctor about the basic signs and symptoms of neuropathy. Early identification and frequent check-ups can have a significant impact on the effects of neuropathy. The most common type is peripheral neuropathy. It is also called distal symmetric neuropathy or sensorimotor neuropathy. In this type, the legs, feet, toes, arms, and hands experience pain and loss of sensation. Generally, the lower limbs are affected before the upper limbs and loss of reflexes is common. It is with this type of neuropathy that ulcers, sores, infections and, in severe cases, amputation are most common (Dyck, Feldmen and Vinick). Autonomic neuropathy mainly affects the internal organs. It can affect the cardiovascular system by hindering its ability to regulate pulse, blood pressure and body temperature. It can affect the digestive system with gastroparesis, dysphagia, uncontrollable weight loss and malnutrition. Frequent urinary tract infections are also common. Sexual responses, other than drive and desire, are also affected in this type. It can affect the individual's ability to recognize symptoms associated with hypoglycemia, putting them at risk for additional nerve damage and diabetes risks (Dyck, Feldmen, and Vinick). Proximal neuropathy goes by many names. Often called lumbosacral plexus neuropathy, femoral neuropathy...... middle of article...... and health care provider recommendations are essential to prevent serious damage. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and poor diet all contribute to worsening neuropathy symptoms. Therefore, support systems and constant education should be part of any treatment plan for the at-risk patient or patient suffering from diabetic neuropathy.
