  • Essay / Race Relations - 1099

Malcom ; and when it comes to humanity as a family, there is no question of integration or intermarriage. It is simply a human being marrying another human being or a human being living around and with another human being” (“Quote”). Recognizing that intermarriage is for people who marry each other is an important step in the evolution of America as a country. However, America did not begin to accept intermarriage. At the time of the civil war, it was illegal to marry a spouse of another ethnicity. Over time, however, this law was abolished, and with it the American view became increasingly tolerant and largely positive. Interracial relationships have become increasingly widely accepted across America since its former state, as evidenced in Sue Monk Kidd's book, The Secret Life of Bees, of being socially repugnant. Throughout history, interracial dating and marriage have been highly controversial conflicts. An example is the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, passed in several southern states. Bill Wanlund, who has a degree in journalism and writes for CQ Researcher, wrote about the case that repealed that law. He recalled that in 1965, “the Supreme Court, in the case of Loving v. Virginia, unanimously ruled that restrictions on interracial marriage were unconstitutional. (Wanlund). In Loving v. Virginia, Richard and Mildred Loving had moved to Virginia, but Richard was sentenced to a few months in prison because their union violated state law. His wife, Mildred (who was African American), took the case to the Supreme Court for trial. Ultimately, the Supreme Court ruled in its favor ("Like... middle of paper... the little wall is hardly a barrier at all, all we humans have to do for the to overcome is to elevate ourselves.” a tiny amount We must educate ourselves and jump over the old barrier built by our fathers, only then could the racial prejudices that separated and prohibited interracial marriage and interracial dating be forgotten.
