Essay / TV Shows: Pop Culture Lawyers - 1805
Love 'em or hate 'em, heroes or villains; there is no doubt that lawyers are good entertainment. Current TV show offerings like The Good Wife, Suits, and Law and Order prove that legal dramas continue to be a popular topic for pop culture media. Although one can easily find hundreds of titles when searching for entertainment in the legal genre, the characterization of fictional lawyers varies widely, from the positive side of average decent citizens to crusading heroes, and the negative side of mediocre drudgery to villains corrupt and amoral. The popularity of this legal drama and its potential impact have sparked concern and scrutiny from the legal profession in recent decades. A study of first-year law students found that the prominence of lawyers in pop culture was so pervasive that it had a significant influence on students' views of law and lawyers (Asimow et al. 427 -428). Although the study shows this has had a mostly positive influence, law professor Michael Asimow worries that in addition to a host of other issues, a trend toward negative portrayals of lawyers could attract a different type of student towards careers in law. the positive role models that Hollywood used to promote in the “golden” era (16). Asimow also notes that most people do not have personal experience with lawyers and the legal system and so their knowledge is drawn from popular culture (7). When pop culture portrays lawyers as heroes, it can have a positive impact, just as making them villains can have a negative impact.
