On the subject of “orientalism”, Edward Said certainly has no shortage of opinions. His understanding is that when Europeans created a division between the Western and Eastern worlds, the civilized Western nations were called the West, and the less civilized Eastern nations were so called the Orient. Said, however, saw a concern when Europeans began to generalize the attributes they associated with the Orient and then include them in the scientific discoveries and media that would be seen and thus influence the ideas of the Western world. Because of his understanding of Orientalism and his strong arguments against Western prejudices, Said is often seen as either a powerful corrective to these prejudices or an obstacle to open discussion on the subject. While I can't say I completely agree with either side, I would say that Edward Said does more to hinder open discussion than to correct bias, which is both put into evident in his own writings as well as those of his dissident contemporaries.
