  • Essay / Silence throughout "Under the Net" - 2465

According to Wittgenstein, "Only in silence can one remain in the truth." Constant events and moving prevent an individual from finding the truth or the individual is somehow unaware of the facts around them. This idea can be linked to Jake Donaghue in Iris Murdoch's first published novel. Jake, a character who wanders without aspirations among friends in search of ease, realizes over time what life is. He struggles with the idea that silence and truth merge hand in hand. Throughout Iris Murdoch's Under the Net, Jake is challenged by the silence of the people and events around him. This ultimately allows him to overcome this distinct barrier to find his true calling in life and become a successful writer. In his efforts to become a successful writer, Jake wrote a book based on his conversations with Hugo, a friend he met during an experiment. with colds.
