Essay / Is competition good or not? - 808
There are competitions all over the world. Everywhere we go, people are competing against each other. Does competition bring us happiness or sadness? According to Theodor Isaac Rubin of “Competition and Happiness,” competition brings out the worst in people. Rubin said competition has been passed down to us through training and generations. Rubin believes this creates an atmosphere of stress and paranoia that contrasts with our peace of mind. To support his argument, Rubin told us about his time in medical school, when there was no competition and the atmosphere was compassionate rather than stressful and isolating. I agree with Rubin that competition does not bring out the best in people because it can make them more selfish and aggressive, lower their self-esteem, and prevent them from accepting help from others. Competitions aren't just about fun and games. . Things like taking classes in college can also be a kind of competition for students. Every time a new term is about to start, students would be stressed trying to get the classes they want. Last term, a friend of mine didn't take any of the courses she had chosen. So, she was stressed about having to finish all her major requirements on time. This shows that living in a place where competitions are omnipresent can be very stressful. On top of that, passing all courses with a C or higher can also be a competition for students. Last term, I was really stressed for my macroeconomics class. I thought I was going to fail this class because it was such a challenge for me. On the other hand, my friend who also took the same course as me did much better. I was really stressed because I tried ...... middle of paper ...... its people. Additionally, it will make us more jealous of others and feel even worse about ourselves. Overall, there are many types of competitions, but most of them do not bring happiness to people. Although competition makes people work harder, people are better off without it because it can turn a normal person into an aggressive and selfish person. Additionally, it can turn a friend into an enemy because in the world of competition, friends don't exist since they all want to be better than each other. Competition can also create jealousy and stress in people, for example when they find out that someone else is doing better than them or when they cannot get what they wanted, they will be stressed . Therefore, I support Rubin's argument that competition makes people worse rather than better and that competition does not bring happiness..
