  • Essay / Cindy Staring at Keswick Theater - 733

The Keswick Theater was honored to host Cindy Lauper's 30th Anniversary Tour, "She Is So Unusual 30th Anniversary", this Friday, November 15th. You want to have fun,” was the agent and we certainly did! The Keswick is located in downtown Glenside. The seats are comfortable and the acoustics are the best. There are a number of good restaurants and an excellent cafe. Come a little early and hang out in the cafe and you can often see the group having a hot brew. I recommend arriving about 45 minutes before the show so parking is not a challenge. The theater was designed by the famous architect Horace Trumbauer and some of its original grandeur has been preserved. It's stalled in the middle of a major restoration, however, which doesn't take away from the experience. The concert opened with Hunter Valentine, a Canadian indie rock/punk band with a rounded house punch. They have a striking style and push the music towards the audience. The audience was quite diverse: young fans especially women, lots of moms with their daughters dressed like Cindy, and yes us people who were them when she started. The lead singer of Hunter Valentine is and she has a powerful, deep voice. She has some stage presence and performs with her bandmates. The fact is that this is an all-female group. I don't know their music, but I enjoyed "Just Another Love Song", "Staten Island Dream Tour" and I think the title was "Feel Like Tonight". The group received polite applause and performed about 10 songs. Being the warm-up for someone like Cindy is both a blessing and a curse. I think they did a good job and were rewarded by the fans without a trace of ...... middle of paper ......usic, I guess that's why I I love so much, but I think she really touched the audience with her acoustic version. She has a great voice and it worked. She played the string dulcimer with aplomb and Eric played the melodica with passion and sensitivity that made this wonderful song a true experience. Cindy is a true Renaissance woman. She has been nominated for every award under the musical sun. She won several of the most recent Tonys for the music of “Kinky Boots.” Not being a music critic leaves me as a music fan. Fan of what I find simply brilliant. Music. I'm generally amazed by most of the artists I go see. I think Cindy is more than an artist, she's an entertainer. Someone who has mastered their craft and their fan base. It was another simply remarkable evening of live music, in a fine venue, with an audience mostly looking for entertainment and adoration..
