  • Essay / Kids are glued to their screens - 1632

Everywhere you look you see kids with their heads down staring at their smartphones. Once they get home, they turn to their computer or tablet. Once it's time for bed, they pick up their phone and then lie in bed while browsing the internet and texting their friends. This is becoming a common pattern in the daily lives of children of our generation. If kids don't have extracurricular activities or their parents are at work, they will automatically turn to their computers, phones, tablets and televisions. This is a serious problem for today's generation of kids, and my solution is to create an app built into every device right out of the box, designed to help parents track time of their children and to regulate the duration for which they are allowed to be in front of screens. I'm not a grumpy adult who views technology as a cancerous anomaly to be avoided at all costs. I'm not one of those irritable moms who doesn't want anyone to touch a computer because it's a waste of time. I'm a normal student who probably uses the computer more than average. I know firsthand what too much screen time can do to a person. Too much screen time can lead to obese children. “Childhood obesity has more than doubled among children and quadrupled among adolescents over the past 30 years” (Adolescent). How does screen time lead to childhood obesity? “Sitting and looking at a screen is time that is not spent on physical activity” (Kaneshiro). Another good point made by Kaneshiro is that “TV commercials and other screen advertisements can teach children to make less healthy food choices. Most of the time, foods shown in advertisements aimed at children are high in sugar, salt or fat. It’s not nutritious” (Kaneshiro)...... middle of document ......ters for Disease Control and Prevention, February 27, 2014. Web. May 12, 2014.
