  • Essay / Compare and Contrast Araby and A&P - 875

One of the differences between the two is that the character of "Araby" appears to be much scarier. For example, the narrator says, “Every morning I lay on the floor in the front parlor, watching its door. The blind was lowered an inch from the sash so I couldn't be seen. (248). In "A&P", Sammy shows no such traits. In this story, the protagonist begins to fall in love with the girl who lives across the street from him. After spending days and days without speaking to him, one day she came to talk to him. The narrator said: “She asked me if I was going to Arabia. I forgot if I answered yes or no. It would be a magnificent mess; she said she would love to go” (249). After the narrator found out that the girl wanted but couldn't go, he was determined to go and bring her home a gift. On the day of the bazaar, due to overdue money obligations, the narrator arrived too late and all the stalls were closed.
