  • Essay / What are the differences between Ernest Hemingway and...

Without an in-depth knowledge of the American's true feelings and thoughts, the disconnect between the American and Jig is more pronounced. Hemingway uses the word "look" in an attempt to lead readers to the characters' true feelings, but each "look" seemingly has no meaning without the words and thoughts behind it. The American's words are the only insight into his feelings about the situation he and Jig find themselves in. He really seems to believe that an abortion is no big deal when he says "it's really a terribly simple operation Jig, it's not really an operation at all... I wouldn't let you do it if you don't didn't want to. But I know it’s perfectly simple” (116). Her complete lack of concern for Jig regarding the operation further shows how a difference in viewpoints changes the way readers interpret love between two very similar men.
