Sometimes specific religious traditions, practices, and beliefs of the past are not enough to fill the spiritual void of the modern human being. Even more so, one religion alone cannot hold all the answers to satisfy an individual's desire for enlightenment, and many are choosing a new path. This is the path that led to the creation of the religious denomination of Unitarian Universalism. The faith of Unitarian Universalism originated with the formation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) from the merger of the two liberal Protestant denominations of Unitarianism and Universalism. in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1961. No single person can be considered the founder of this faith. By the time of their founding, these two denominations had expanded beyond their Christian roots, and as such, many members of the Unitarian Universalist congregation may identify with more than one religion, making them very diverse theologically. This characteristic can be referred to as religious pluralism or acceptance of various religions. Members cherish and respect above all their solemn and unified pursuit of spiritual growth and understanding. The most defining characteristic of Unitarian Universalism is that it follows no specific set of beliefs and has no official creed. Members have the absolute freedom to seek and find their own truths on topics such as existence, nature, the meaning of life, creation and the afterlife. In lieu of formal standards or beliefs, the Unitarian Universalist Association has adopted "Principles, Objectives and Sources" which its members uphold, promote and share as part of their faith.
