Essay / The Five Stages of Consciousness - 908
Narcolepsy is when a person falls asleep randomly and suddenly they have no control over it. The sleep attack can last from fifteen minutes to an hour. These seizures are very dangerous for the person because they can drive, walk on the street, they can occur anywhere and at any time. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that “narcolepsy affects men and women equally. Symptoms often appear during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood (between ages 7 and 25), but can occur at any time in life. It is estimated that between 135,000 and 200,000 people in the United States have narcolepsy. However, as this condition often goes undiagnosed, this figure may be higher. Narcolepsy can be genetic, arise from an autoimmune disease or a brain injury. Narcolepsy has no cure but can be treated. Treatment includes medications prescribed by doctors, short naps throughout the day, avoiding caffeine two hours before bed, relaxing before bed, and trying to return to normal sleep.
