Essay / Dyslexia Case Study - 2979
In the following assignment, I will examine the effects of implementing the Acceleread and Accerelwrite programs on dyslexic students in our school. I will look at how this can be implemented in our teaching and analyze how successful I think the program has been for our students. My school is an independent primary school which follows the International Baccalaureate PYP programme. The school welcomes local and international students from over thirty different countries around the world. We currently have over 200 students on our learning support register, including over 17 students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia. As I work closely with a group of 3rd year students falling into this category, I will use them as the basis of my support strategy. It is widely accepted that dyslexia is characterized by a deficit in phonological processing, which manifests as reading and spelling difficulties in affected children, Snowling (2000). Although it is recognized that these symptoms are now more widely recognized by teachers and other education professionals than in the past and that the identification of dyslexia has become more widespread in schools, the emphasis is now about intervention and how teachers can support dyslexics. Students with dyslexia sometimes feel alienated or different from their peers and may also suffer from low self-esteem and frustration, especially if their learning needs are not met. correctly (Goldup & Ostler, 2000, & Locke et al, 1997). Underachieving students may become disinterested, unwilling to engage in a written activity or read a...... middle of paper ...... as part of the program across the school in the framework of the next research cycle. Alongside this, further investigation needs to be carried out into how teachers respond to dyslexic students in the classroom and how the learning environment and teacher planning can be adapted to support dyslexic students throughout their learning in order to prevent learners from being unhappy in the future. To achieve this, our SEN department plans to develop the use of additional support strategies which will help meet the needs of pupils with dyslexia across the school. We plan to work closely with our teachers and TAs and hope to hold regular staff trainings to share and support these strategies. We will also look at the implementation of these ideas across the range of learning difficulties we encounter within our department as well as within our school..
