No matter the sport, athletes benefit from a sudden boost of confidence and a spark of momentum on their side. The question is: Is momentum a series of events that actually help athletes during a match? Or is it just a misperception of random sequences? This concept has been debated for years in the world of sports psychology. Many athletes are aware of the concept of "momentum" during a match and often attempt to use it to their advantage, whether it's the field, a good play, or simply winning by a wide margin . However, it is important for sports psychologists to still study this topic today because athletes need to know whether or not momentum is a key factor and whether it will help them to their advantage. Athletes need to have a good understanding of what's going to happen because they can't rely on something that may or may not exist to help them win games. Players and coaches miss out on valuable information if they don't fully understand what the concept really means. Often at sporting events, a team gets that spark of confidence and plays and performs better than ever. People generally say that the team is starting to gain momentum and play better as a team. Sports psychologists who believe that momentum can affect a team show that momentum is a domino effect and that one part of the chain leads to the other.
