Essay / Movie Commentary: The Book of Eli - 716
“God directs our lives and brings circumstances and people into our lives in an infinite amount of combinations, to fulfill His purposes for us” (“Lesson 5” , 2014). This statement is true for Eli, the main character of the Book of Eli. He lives in a world riddled with crime and violence. It is a battleground between good and evil. As a result, one can't help but be drawn into Eli's life as he travels through wastelands, encountering bikers, gangs, young girls, bartenders, henchmen and d others in often fatal circumstances. The film features a main character who embodies the Christian worldview in his quest to safeguard the sacred word of God while battling the evils of what remains of a world thirty years after its destruction by war. From a voice he hears, Eli realizes his life's purpose is to protect and preserve the only surviving Bible. He is a blind man traveling west. He orders murders... middle of paper ... amount of violence. I struggled with Eli's murders and had to continually remind myself that, for the most part, Eli was alone in a lawless society where citizens sought to protect themselves. He needed to kill to survive and fulfill his purpose in life. It was not until Eli reached his destination that he was among others who shared his desire to maintain the sanctity of religion and wished to bring order to humanity and the world. I admired Eli’s conviction in his faith despite all the obstacles he faced. This proves that God gives us strength when we face difficult situations as we work to achieve our purpose in life. In a world where any semblance of faith seemed nonexistent and violence and murder seemed to be the norm, it was encouraging to see the Christian worldview, in which I strongly believe, prevail..
