This type of focus is called listening to the words you and the other person use that cause either conflict or mutual cooperation” (p. 100). When you use this listening style to focus, it increases your listening effectiveness. When you successfully deal with others, you will become more positive and confident. When you have a negative self-image, you will usually feel that others view you negatively. According to Burley-Allen (1995); “It is important to maintain a positive self-image by listening to yourself (p.100). Taking the time to truly listen and learn that your negative internal statements are interfering with your ability to become an effective listener can be a step in the right direction toward improving your listening” (p. 101). It's important to look at how you judge yourself. When you discover the negative aspects of your listening skills, you can help yourself discover what internal thought processes you will need to change to help you become a better listener. I hope this will help me determine what areas I need to improve and how I can improve my listening skills. I believe everyone can find something in their listening skills that they need to improve on and ensure they can make the changes necessary to be successful.
