Oliver TwistChapter 1Oliver Twist was born in a workshop with the help of a drunken nurse and the parish surgeon. His mother, whom they found in the street that night, has no wedding ring and dies after kissing her child on the forehead.Chapter 2Oliver is sent to a branch of a hospice for children like him. The matron is given a sum of money to keep each child healthy, but she keeps most of it for herself and lets the children starve and sometimes die. When Oliver is nine years old, a church official named Mr. Bumble takes Oliver to the workshop. In the workhouse, the poor slowly starve instead of experiencing the rapid starvation they would face on the streets. One evening during dinner, the children drew lots to see who would ask for more food. Oliver is chosen and when he requests it, the officials are so upset that they offer a reward of five pounds to anyone who takes Oliver away from the workshop. Chapter 3 Oliver is whipped and locked up as an example to others. A cruel chimney sweep offers to take Oliver and his apprentice. However, many boys died in his care, so he is only rewarded with three books. Oliver, Mr. Bumble, and the chimney sweep go before a judge to finalize the deal, but the judge notices Oliver's frightened and pale face. When asked why he seems so scared, Oliver falls down and begs to be beaten or killed instead of becoming an apprentice chimney sweep. The judge refuses to allow the apprenticeship and the reward for Oliver is announced again. Chapter 4 The officials consider making Oliver a cabin boy, thinking that he will die very quickly in horrible conditions, but the contractor of Parish undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry, takes Oliver as an apprentice. Mrs. Sowerberry develops... middle of paper......d eyes and accidentally hangs herself.Chapter 51Oliver and his friend go to her hometown, accompanied by Monks. They discover that a letter has been written saying that as long as Oliver has not committed any illegal acts, he will inherit the estate, otherwise the estate should belong to Monks. They also discovered that Rose was actually Agnes' sister, and after learning that her parents were not disgraced, she agreed to marry Harry. Chapter 52 Fagin was sentenced to death, but before he is hanged, Oliver and Brownlow visit him to find out where he hid the papers verifying Oliver's inheritance. Chapter 53Noah is pardoned for his crimes because he decides to testify against Fagin.
