In 1963, such a scenario occurred when Malcolm X gave a speech commonly known as “The Ballot or the Bullet.” The speech, in its own creation, can only be compared to Dr. Martin Luther's "I Have a Dream" speech. While the first was given in Cleveland, Ohio, the second took place in Washington. The speech, "ballot or bullet", was intended to bring awareness to African Americans commonly referred to as Blacks about their struggle to achieve their civil liberties as envisioned by the nation when it was established as a free state . speeches delivered mostly at protests and mass actions across the United States were based on the continued oppression of America's black population. Such oppression sparked public outcry, especially since it was carried out by the same government that was supposed to act as protector of its subjects. He challenged the fact that African Americans should be considered legal American citizens and be afforded all the rights that were envisioned as theirs, if they were to be able to enjoy civil liberties. He also felt that it was necessary to truly seek his administration, as the leaders of the time only sought to confer the same rights and freedoms in order to woo blacks back into power (Malcolm X, 1963). He recognized that there was an awakening among black people in their search for equal treatment and the achievement of political power (Malcolm X, 1963). He thus called on leaders to ensure their authenticity if they wished to obtain the votes of blacks as a bloc, otherwise blacks would wake up and put in power those they wanted (Malcolm X, 1963). the ballot or ball, 1963.
