Essay / The role of religion in the Iliad and Troy - 1059
One incident in particular that clearly shows this incident is when Paris challenges Menelaus to fight for Helen. The difference is that when Paris is almost defeated in the Iliad, Aphrodite breaks the strap of his helmet and then takes him to her castle. This compares to Troy when he crawls backwards and Hector is forced to save his life. This once again shows how much the ancient Greeks, as a culture, valued the gods and how we view family today. The difference in situation shows more of a difference in terms of how the gods were viewed than how the Greeks viewed family. Although the ancient Greeks depended on their family to protect them, they also entrusted much of what happened to them to the gods. As previously stated, we don't face as many unexpected dangers as before. Which means we expect those close to us to protect us. Another example in which we see a difference between the two works is when Achilles interacts with his mother. This difference shows how in today's culture we do not look up to a multitude of gods, but rather we look up to our parents and trust their advice as if it were defining truth. The role of religion is different in the Iliad and Troy in many ways, whether it is the role of the gods, the role of the demigods, and how they interact with each other. THE
