  • Essay / Maslow's Self-Actualization - 1171

Maslow's Self-Actualization was developed from his hierarchy of needs. In the hierarchy of needs, there are seven stages. Maslow did not believe that self-actualization determined life; rather, he believed that it gave the individual the desire or motivation to realize a budding ambition (Gleitman and Reisberg). As a person moves up the ranks of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, they may eventually reach the pinnacle of self-actualization (Gleitman and Reisberg). The first stage concerns physiological needs, that is, where an individual will find food and water; they will also be able to use basic functions such as sleeping and breathing. Once the individual is done with these needs, they will move on to the second stage, which is their safety needs such as safety and shelter. The third stage concerns social needs and acceptance, for example belonging or integration within a family or group of friends. The fourth stage concerns self-esteem, that is, independence, self-respect and respect for others. The fifth stage concerns cognitive needs which concern knowledge, meaning and understanding of the world. The sixth stage deals with aesthetic needs which are needs for beauty, order and appreciation. Once an individual has completed all the stages, he or she is now ready for the final stage of self-realization. Self-actualization was based on the search for potential and fulfillment within oneself. For someone to truly understand this level, they must meet basic needs, but they must also master those needs. Maslow states a more significant message of self-realization "the intrinsic growth of what is already in the organism or more precisely of what the organism itself is...the reality of the self...... middle of paper ...... They will finally know who they are and what they are going to do in life It is personal fulfillment for every human being to accomplish the last step in the hierarchy of needs. are truly capable of and knowing that they can do anything they want In conclusion, Abraham Maslow's self-realization focused on what motivates and desires humans to reach their potential. be that finding self-realization was almost impossible, but everyone can Find their own potential within them because everyone was created equal They just need to discover who they really are and accept who they are. to discover their potential For some people, it can be easy to find their potential and fulfillment in life, but. for others, they may need to hit rock bottom to understand what they're really made of.
