The son of an alcoholic father and a very religious mother, Gein grew up alongside his older brother, Henry, in a household run by his mother preaching the sins of carnal desire. With effeminate behavior, Ed Gein became a target for bullies. His classmates and teachers recalled mannerisms from the past, such as seemingly random laughter, as if he were laughing at his own personal jokes. His mother scolded him every time he tried to make friends, so he didn't try anymore because of the pain it caused him. Undistracted by his social life, he does well in school, mainly in reading.
