Essay / Spirit Bear - 1297
Sometimes, students with behavioral and learning disabilities do not receive the support they need to succeed in school because teachers, parents and the community doesn't want to take care of them. However, this is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing, because students need these supports to succeed. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, we meet Cole, a fifteen-year-old teenager who has many behavioral problems; and is about to go to prison. Cole is an example: When a student with a behavioral problem or learning disability does not receive the support and services they need, they develop resentment toward the world. Parents are expected to support their child at home in a variety of ways, so that they can feel safe at home and know that they are wanted and loved. Teachers and counselors are expected to provide support in schools. Additionally, they must create an environment that allows for mistakes, but we learn from those mistakes. Finally, the community must provide support in a broader sense, as it must help not only those with a learning disability or behavioral disorder, but also the community as a whole. Touching Spirit Bear is an example of where supports gone wrong, but it also sets an example that a student can still be helped through these supports. Before explaining why parents, teachers, and community are an essential part of a student's support system, I wanted to give a brief overview of the novel Touching Spirit Bear. We are introduced to the character of Cole who has had many behavioral issues in the past and present. However, his latest problem was more intense than any others he encountered. A boy named Peter told police that it was Cole who robbed the hardware store because he was bragging...... middle of paper ...... Circle of Justice takes into account all testimonies which they finally agreed to send back to him.In conclusion, students need the support of parents, teachers and the community to succeed in life because they are there to help you in times of need. Cole may not have had much support during the first fifteen years of his life, but he eventually found the teachers he needed. He needed someone who actually cared and didn't just act compassionate; that's what Edwin and Garvey brought to Cole. A parent is supposed to be supportive at home, a teacher is supposed to help at school, and the community is supposed to help anyone who needs help. These three support systems make a student feel loved, cared for, and helped. When these three support systems work together, they create accommodations, modifications, supports, and interventions for students..
