Dry Beriberi and Alcoholic Neuropathy Cause and Affect Randell Jack Long Sr. Mohave Community CollegeAuthor's NoteBiology 100, Section 111Professor Leonard M D'OrazioMarch 31, 2014A Review of the LiteratureThis article highlights the cause and effects of this disorder problem and its link to socio-economic status. Dry beriberi is a disease believed to be caused by malnutrition. The history of the disease is documented in China as early as 600 BC. Dryberiberi is derived from a Sinhalese expression meaning “weak, weak”. (www.wikipidia.org/wiki/beriberi) The effects of beriberi were at their peak in the late 1800s. The disease had plague-like effects on lower-class minorities in East Asia. In the 1800s, Japanese cadets on ships were fed only rice. This led to many deaths due to the malnutrition they suffered. The senior officers of these ships were fed fish, milk and meat. Dry beriberi had adverse effects on the body. Once the body is deprived of the essential coenzyme. the body fails to enter the citric acid cycle, thus disrupting ADP production. According to D'Orazio (1985) "Nutritional polyneuropathy is generally characterized by progressive weakness and muscular atrophy to careful degrees involving, symmetrically, the legs more than the arms and the distal muscles more than the proximal muscles." Vitamin B is essential for cellular respiration. Niacin B3 is a source of NAD+. The electron acceptor in stage 1 of the respiratory cycle. Also known as Glycolsis. When it captures the electron, it becomes NADH. NADH is then converted to Pryuvate which will enter the citric acid cycle. It then transports the electron to the elec...... middle of paper ......c Class and its relationship to ethanol consumption. "Nutritional polyneuropathy - definition of nutrition... (nd).
