The civil rights movement was a push for change with the goal of upholding the legal rights of African Americans. This illustrates the theme of change, because during this period, between 1954 and 1968, American society underwent an enormous transformation. Not only was there now a judicial and legal difference, but the mentality towards people of color began to change for the better. This example illustrates that change is beneficial and constructive because it shows that change is the only way to improve. We must change to move forward. Another specific example where change was successful in creating favorable circumstances for us is the Women's Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. It was proclaimed as a convention to analyze and examine social issues , condition and civil and religious rights of women. This example relates to the theme of change because this event led to the formation of the American National Women's Suffrage Association and paved the way for the first path to the women's rights movement. It ultimately guaranteed better legal and constitutional rights for women. This example supports the idea that change is a good thing because it shows that change can have a constructive ripple effect on our society and help us grow. A third example that helps prove my initial assertion is the Stonewall riots that took place on June 28. 1969. According to sources, the Stonewall Riots were a "series of spontaneous protests by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid." Many gay Americans in the 1950s and 1960s faced an anti-gay legal system. The Stonewall Inn was a bar that catered to a wide range of patrons and was known to be popular among members of the gay community. Police raids on gay bars were commonplace at the time, but when it came to the Stonewall Inn, people resisted. Tensions between the gay community and the police eventually turned into protests and a movement for LGBT members. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
