Essay / Twelve Who Ruled – Why Enduring Terror Was Necessary
In 1793-1794, the reign of terror invoked by the twelve members of the Committee of Public Safety (CPS) was inevitable and paved the way for a metamorphosis in the within France during the French Revolution. While the word terror is often associated with Halloween or stories meant to scare for fun, the word had a much more serious meaning to the French. The theme of fear allowed members of the CPS to change the monarchy into a revolutionary government in hopes of finally promulgating the already drafted constitution (75). A group of well-educated radical Republicans, known as the Jacobins, developed the CPS during the fifth year of World War II. French Revolution and each of the twelve members held monthly elections to continue to govern France (72). During this period, France and its people needed help. The monarchy that controlled France eight centuries earlier ignored and heavily taxed the middle/lower class residents (the san-culottes) who, ironically, happened to be the majority and the poorest. The goal of the CPS was to establish rights and privileges for the middle and lower classes that only the nobility and clergy enjoyed. While the nobles endured the negative consequences of the revolution and wars of previous years, most of the nation faced these effects much harder. One of the main tasks of the new revolutionary government was to repair the damage caused by the previously ruling monarchical regime. Other orders of business included the supervision of revolutionary armies, as well as the generals of actual armies working to purge France of impending invaders and the distribution of food and necessities (74). The CPS never intended for a revolutionary government to be a permanent solution,...... middle of paper......bespierre predicted it would create a gateway for another chapter involving the French Revolution, the military dictatorship (372). The steps for France to become an independent republic were certainly not easy, but without these transitions, the nation would have taken much longer to progress. In today's society, it's hard to believe that violence and terror would be essential for anything other than entertainment. . Unfortunately, to triumph as an independent nation, villainy is often unavoidable and used only as a last resort. As we discussed in class, other countries have recently attempted or are in the process of achieving sovereignty that is so easy to take for granted. Although the development may not be the same as that of the French Revolution, the terror produced by the Committee of Public Safety serves as a warning to those seeking revolutionary freedom..
