  • Essay / Euthanasia - 683

Euthanasia is the premature end of a life in order to avoid suffering. It is obviously illegal in all countries except Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Euthanasia should not be confused with physician-assisted suicide because of the essential difference which lies in the self-administration of the lethal drug by the patient himself. The society that supports euthanasia is pro-choice while those who oppose it are pro-life because they believe that every life is precious. I support the pro-choice arguments for legalizing euthanasia for these primary reasons. First, it is clear that euthanasia should be legal because it is a means of quickly and humanely ending a patient's suffering with or without the consent of the affected party. According to a set of euthanasia statistics verified in the last quarter of 2013, 86% of the public supports euthanasia, especially if the patient is terminally ill or on life support. This stark difference between those of Pro-Choice and Pro-Life indicates that euthanasia plays an important role at the end of a seriously ill person's life, because death is usually slow, painful and undignified. I believe that euthanasia not only helps dying patients, but also helps their family members by shortening their grief. If animals can be slaughtered to end their suffering, why can't humans be shown the same kindness? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) declared in 1996 that every human being should have the right to die because they “have a protected interest in choosing to end intolerable suffering.” I believe in letting people choose what they want to do with their own lives; whether it’s living in pain or ending it sooner. Second, legalize euthanasia...... middle of document ...... respect patient autonomy and, ultimately, make a dignified death possible. I support legalizing euthanasia globally because I believe it will improve not the quantity but the quality of life for patients and their family members. Works cited1.
