IronyFlannery O'Connor's short story "Everything That Rises Must Converge" is set in the early 1960s in the South. In this story, O'Connor captures the evolving discourse between a mother and her son during a time when white supremacy was slowly eroding and integration was beginning to be accepted within the confines of society. The main character, Julian, is a college graduate who, given his education, imposes liberal views on segregation. As his mother is uneducated and holds racist and ignorant views, Julien constantly looks down on her and is always looking for ways to teach his mother a lesson. As the story unfolds, readers begin to see each character for who they really are and we discover that Julien and his mother really aren't so different after all. By incorporating different sets of irony like situational irony, character irony, and dramatic irony, O'Conner strives to prove that the theme of you can't hide.
