This statistic is accounted for by a point and count where individuals go through cities and count homeless individuals. Both figures showed an increase in the number of families suffering from poverty. The population that individuals see on the streets is more likely to be chronically homeless. These chronically homeless people are all the more difficult to house because they are used to living on the streets and do not want to leave. They suffer from alcohol and drug addiction and about a third suffer from mental illness. Another interesting fact is that people can develop mental illness due to lack of socialization and proper conditions.
