The book is something of a social commentary on the period of Eastern European immigration to America, at its peak. The novel provides insight into how foreigners (mainly Jewish immigrants) integrate into mainstream society. Throughout the novel, you travel alongside the main character David Schearl, aged six to eight years old and growing up in Brownsville, on the Lower East Side of New York. David is torn between the love of his overprotective mother and the hatred of his angry, mentally disturbed father, in a quest to find meaning in his life, unlike every other child of immigrants he comes into contact with. All the adventures David encounters and all the people he comes into contact with are just the author's way of depicting the inner struggle of immigrants and coping with the pressures of life seen through the eyes of a remarkably perceptive child and imaginative. the opening scenes take place in New York Harbor in 1907, a time when the influx of foreigners was at its peak. A woman and her small child get off the boat to find her husband who had preceded them to the new world to start a better life than the one they were accustomed to in their old country. The author takes you through what it's like to enter New York Harbor and see the city's skyline and lights; and also feel the sense of hope and promise of a better future for immigrants. However, when Albert Schearl arrives late and indifferent to greet a wife and son who do not immediately recognize him, the reader hints that trouble awaits the Schearl family. Father Albert Schearl is presented as a very haughty man. and proud who believes that he should abandon all signs of his former upbringing and conform to the American way of life. He is a printer by trade but cannot hold a job long enough due to his violent and uncontrollable temper. He thinks that people are constantly watching his every move and therefore he cannot give
