    Character types often vary in literary works; for example, characters are often dynamic or static. A dynamic character, also called a fluid character, is a character that evolves over the course of a literary work. On the other hand, a static character is one that remains the same. Walter Lee Younger is a dynamic character in A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Along with four other family members, Walter Lee resides in a cramped two-bedroom apartment on Chicago's South Side. Walter Lee's mother, Lena Younger, also known as Mama, occupies one of the bedrooms with her daughter Beneatha. The other bedroom belongs to Walter Lee and his wife Ruth; while their son Travis occupies a sofa bed in the family living room. His family's living situation often left Walter Lee frustrated because he could not improve it. Dissatisfied with his job as a driver for a rich white man, Walter Lee struggles to progress. In his eyes, a driver is not a position worthy of a man; however, a business owner is. In fact, becoming a business owner was part of Walter Lee's American dream. Due to the death of her husband, Lena received a check for $10,000 from the insurance company. Aspiring to be a business owner, Walter Lee wanted to use the money to invest in a liquor store; however, his mother planned to use the money for a down payment on a house. His obsession with the liquor store caused Walter Lee to become detached from what is important and affected the entire family; however, it also taught him valuable lessons that transformed him for the better. Walter Lee would do anything to provide a better life for his family, even if it was morally wrong; this caused headaches for his very religious...... middle of paper ...... the hood plays a role in the work as a whole as it illustrates to the audience how a man is affected when he feels as if he is not measuring up to the standards for his gender set by society. The end result of Walter Lee's change because of his mother and her strong values ​​plays an important role in the overall message. His mother's words made him a proud, self-respecting man who will not let racism take over. Overall, Mom's values ​​made Walter Lee a proud family man that his son could be proud of. An overall message one can take away from A Raisin in the Sun is to stay true to yourself with pride and not let racism stop you from pursuing your dreams. Walter Lee Younger, fluid character who played an essential role in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin. in the sun, changed because of his American dream, his virility and his mother's strong values.
