  • Essay / Indian Residential School System - 642

Canada's Indian Residential School System (residential schools in Canada) was first established in the 19th century in 1879. Residential schools were seen by the Canadian government as a way to civilize and to educate native natives, and found this way to try to get rid of the Indian problem. In 1895, a Canadian governor stated in a report from a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia, that the purpose of the residential school is to civilize the Indians and make them good, useful, law-abiding members, with strict sanctions for any wrongdoing. . Their main reason was to kill the Indian in these children. The purpose of residential schools was to convert Aboriginal people to white society through children, as they were easier to influence and adapt to the new way of life, as adults had already grown up with certain beliefs. Because long before the arrival of Europeans in North America, indigenous peoples had their own education system. Indigenous children learned to survive on their own. Aboriginal elders and parents passed on their survival skills to their children. These boarding schools became compulsory. The Canadian government saw that this was the only way to educate these people and change their way of life, by changing their religion, their language and their beliefs. The main objective of the boarding school was to teach these natives the English language and to change their religion to Christian faith. Schools were run by priests and nuns in almost every province of Canada from 1860 to 1884. By 1931, there were eight residential schools. The period of these certification schools lasted sixty-five years, until the last boarding school which was closed in 1996. This ...... middle of paper ...... before them, they erased all their cultures of their minds. And it was a successful goal for the Canadians. Furthermore, until 1996, when the last residential school was closed and indigenous people finally had their freedom and choice, Canadians did not want to admit that this was a shameful or harmful thing. . Because the impacts of these schools were horrific, Native people today and since they had their rights have made many attempts to educate people about their experiences as residential school students. Many indigenous people are meeting with Canadians today to show that they still hold on to their indigenous culture and traditions and have not forgotten them. Canadians also apologize to them. Natives and non-natives alike began to pick up the pieces. In conclusion, the residential school system itself has been remembered for the damage it caused..
