My adversities are the catalysts that lead to improved opportunities in my life. I believe my life is built with great purpose; a goal that has caused the difficulties I have endured thus far, but also a goal that is at the heart of my various accomplishments, a goal that opens doors to supporting others and gives me hope for an influential and resourceful future. My past history, current experience at Cardozo SHS, and future plans reinforce my desire to attend college and make me an excellent candidate for the Esperanza Scholarship. My childhood led me to where I am today in many different ways. When I was four years old, I was diagnosed with high myopia, an eye disease that causes severe nearsightedness. Three years after my diagnosis, my hospital referred me for treatment abroad because my condition was found to be congenital. Unfortunately, my parents couldn't afford to pay, so they tried to find me a sponsor by enrolling me in a German non-profit religious school. In this school I stayed for a year because, even though I had finished the first year, they only accepted students starting in the first year. Taking inspiration from me, my sister, KeAbnesh Girma Zewdie, created the New Vision Children Foundation (NVCF), a New York-based nonprofit organization focused on providing medical care to underprivileged children suffering from severe visual impairments. As a result, I also became the foundation's spokesperson. Nine years after I entered the German parish school, my sister found me a sponsor in the United States, separate from the foundation. For this reason, I obtained a one-year visitor visa (B1) and attended tenth grade at Brooklyn Preparatory High School. And after thinking everything through and expressing a more specific effort for a better future, I am faced, once again, with another obstacle to my plan to study biochemistry and influence as many lives as possible in a positive way.
