Essay / A comparison of Ozymandias by Percy Shelley and Suddan...
Compare and contrast Ozymandias and Saddam Hussein. The poem, written by Percy Shelley, Ozymandias is a Petrarchan sonnet compared to the second article entitled 'Symbolic in more ways than one' is actually a newspaper article. This is seen throughout the piece as it contains a date "Thursday April 10, 2003", structure and content, the content is more modern so the audience knows that when the topic comes up it will be serious rather than humorous. Ozymandias is a sonnet (a 14-line poem), although it does not have the same simple rhyme scheme or punctuation as most sonnets. Some lines are divided by dots and the rhyme is sometimes irregular. It is written in iambic pentameter, which Shakespeare used extensively in his plays and sonnets. The first line and a half up to the colon are the words of the narrator, the rest are those of the traveler he meets. There are no clear stanzas as such. Instead, it's a divided 14-line block of text with lots of punctuation. Although it does not have an easy, memorable rhyme scheme, the poem is powerful when read aloud. The end of lines one and three rhyme (“earth/sand”), as do the first and last words of line three (“stand/sand”), giving it extra power. Lines 12 and 14 also rhyme and words such as ('decay') mean that the poem ends with a feeling of mystery and emptiness. The use of iambic pentameter means that it has a regular sound. Both pieces symbolize power, how it can be destroyed over time, slowly crumbling rather than being incinerated, like a statue. This is to show that all power is quickly destroyed over time, some more. quickly because they are emotional towards certain people, in Saddam's case, people who want to retaliate because he is dead Also... middle of paper ... the power of the hat slowly fades over time. to become someone's heirloom. They all give different connotations which all have a negative impact on the reader, "rotten and lifeless" gives the idea of something dead, like a rotting corpse "naked;" and ancient" suggests that it has become so old and bare that it contains no power or trace of Ramses and finally "wreck, broken and wrinkled" suggests that the statue which represents the power of Ramses has shriveled and transformed into a box of fossilized bones. So overall, both pieces represent that power, once obtained, only has meaning when the person is alive and using it well, but those are its limitations. It never outlasts their lifespan, as people's true opinions are shown and their legacy is quickly forgotten. They both use different moments that have a connection to convey the same message to the audience..
