  • Essay / Siri Assignment - 891

Siri is an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge browser that functions as an app for iOS from Apple Inc. The app uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of web services. Apple says the software adapts to the user's individual preferences over time and personalizes the results. The name Siri is Norwegian, meaning "beautiful woman who leads you to victory" and comes from the intended name for the original developer's first child. Siri voice recognition software does not originate from Apple, Siri was initially introduced by Apple. as an iPhone application available in the Apple store in 2008. The company Siri Incorporated was subsequently purchased by Apple on April 28, 2010 for just over $200 million. Apple relaunched the Siri app as an integral part of the iPhone 4S and iOS5 on October 4, 2011 and at the same time removed Siri from Apple's app store. Originally, Siri was also planned to be developed for BlackBerry and Android phones. Siri supporters know that Apple's version of the assistant has yet to reach its potential. But as new waves of virtual assistants compete to take over our to-do lists, Apple is under increasing pressure to use the technology it already has and make Siri the multitasking, proactive assistant it once was. The story of Siri suggests that a fantastic future for virtual assistants lies ahead; where we now think of Siri as a footnote to the iPhone's legacy, one day soon the iPhone might be remembered as a footnote to Siri. I hope the new Siri interface fits better in iOS 7 than the previous incarnation in iOS 6. It literally disappears on top of whatever the user is looking at when summoning Siri. I, too, look forward to Siri answering questions faster and more accurately in times to come...
