  • Essay / Cybersecurity - 1532

In Greek mythology, the Theogony recalls the lineage of Greek deities. Part of the story contains information about a monster named Orthrus. The beast is a two-headed dog responsible for guarding the island. However, Orthrus was ultimately slain by the epic hero Heracles. Obviously, a two-headed monster dog has the potential to cause disaster. But trained properly, Orthrus could have been a valiant guard dog and become an honorable hero in Greek legend. Today's technology is a lot like Orthrus in that progress and advancements can have a positive or negative impact on the world. The Internet is a two-headed beast; one head could enable positive evolution while the other head could cause chaos and destruction. The Internet and cybersecurity have become beasts of great power. The power and danger of cyber abuse must be addressed. The world desperately needs a Heracles trained in the arts of cyberwar and cybercrime. Cybersecurity is quickly becoming a major factor in business management, government interactions and privacy. Many people in the United States constantly communicate through devices such as phones or computers, and the use of these devices will only increase. With the abundant use of technology, the possibility of being attacked also increases. The more people using the technology, the higher the likelihood of an attack. Although the media is just beginning to pay attention to cyberattacks, they are occurring more often than in the past. The trend of using cyberspace as a battlefield will most likely become more widespread and common. This trend also calls into question whether or not technology should have limits or restrictions. I...... middle of paper...... energy to finish. In conclusion, Blakeslee makes a reasonable and compelling argument for using education to help combat and prevent cybercrime. Time is also another important factor to recognize. Due to rapid technological advancements over the past thirty years, time may be the only true cure for cybersecurity. The Orthrus of Technology is a beast that can be tamed. Heracles doesn't need to destroy the two-headed monster, and we don't need to completely destroy Internet use and access. However, great caution in terms of cybersecurity must be taken in order to ensure security and peace of mind. Whether it is education or time, litigators and the average citizen need to understand that work and energy must be devoted to fighting cybercrime. Works Cited Blakeslee, Melise R.
