Essay / Grapes of Wrath - 400
The Grapes of WrathIn The Grapes of Wrath, author John Steinbeck describes the life of a migrant family who must leave their land in Oklahoma to find work in California. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck clearly expresses that nature and man are one. The family is known as the Joads and they later realize that the fear is not just for themselves but for the good of the people in the world. The author makes these thoughts known through the different characters in the novel. In this book, Tom Joad is the main character. He's just starting to finish prison for killing a man and feels he's going to take it easy and be careful. At first, he appears to have no remorse for his crime and hopes to find what he wants and needs. Tom is also portrayed as if he takes no mess and is essentially independent. In his free time, he agreed that they should put aside personal concerns and be at peace with each other. Another character is known as Jim Casy. He is a preacher but very different from normal preachers. He preaches the Emersonian doctrine of the Over soul. For example, he feels that a man's soul detaches itself from a larger soul and that in death this individual soul reunites with the larger, higher soul. This belief of Casy's helps him understand that this is the only way for migrants to succeed as a whole. Jim also inspires others to do what is right and see life from a different perspective. Rose of Sharon is depicted as a sick girl, pregnant and expecting to give birth at any moment. She presents herself as being in a bad mood and always complaining. Her family is in great danger but she only fears if it affects her baby..
