There is a philosophy in which women are valued – a movement that dreams of a world in which women and men are equal in social, political programs and economic. This movement is known as feminism. Feminism began in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the United States and the United Kingdom experienced what is known as the first wave of feminism, a movement legendary because it granted women the right to vote and property rights. The second wave of feminism took place in the 1960s and lasted until the 1990s, crucial because it raised issues such as family, work and reproductive rights. The second wave explains why women now serve in the military and work for the media; she also established rape crisis centers and women's shelters (Rampton). Third wave feminism began in the mid-1990s and continues today. However, society has doubts about the necessity of the changes brought by the third wave, but the truth is that feminism is still relevant in our time because, despite popular belief, men and women are not treated on an equal footing. In terms of feminism, the most recurring problem is the gender wage gap. Farrell and Glynn say women receive 77 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. Those who think this is not a problem will argue that women should be paid less because they take more time out of the workforce to start a family. Indeed, recent research shows that "the median salary of a single woman without children under the age of 10" is nine percent more than their male counterparts", this being due to the fact that more women than men go to university (Noguchi).
