Essay / Movie Analysis: Summer's Choice - 905
To begin the movie, the author will grab our attention by revealing someone shooting a gun in an open field. After seeing this, we understand that the message is being sent that we will see a struggling background with the vast open desert. Then we're at Summer's house and she's in the middle of nowhere and there aren't many positive aspects of her house and yard. The opening scenes give us a preview of what to expect throughout the rest of the film. As we see more of Black Rock High School, we see pregnant teenage girls and also teenage girls who don't look like the wealthier members of society. These images also make us feel sympathy, because they are frowned upon by society. As the tone is set for struggling students, we start to see more and more of Summer's artwork and we finally understand that she is truly talented and could showcase her passion and talent to the next level in the field of art. The use of pathos with views is the most powerful because the author is able to set the tone by showing the struggling students and how they don't have much, but then we see Summer's work and how she has a promising future and society is wrong to write her off. “Summer’s Choice” gives us a glimpse of an “at risk” student when in reality she is extremely talented. The author showed us why we view these students as non-useful members of society, but then we realize how completely wrong we are. Through the use of pathos in images and sounds, we gain direct insight into these students who are being perceived in the wrong way, because all these students need is an opportunity to succeed in their studies.
