In the film industry, genre can refer to the different types of techniques and particular themes that are used in the way a film's story is constructed . Genre is a useful method for analyzing a film because it describes the theme of a particular film and allows the viewer to understand the film in a clear and concise manner. The main objective of this research essay will focus on how genre is a useful method for analyzing films. This will be displayed through two main aspects: target audience and how the genre creates the narrative flow of the film. Two important films that display their own genre style that will be referred to are the film "Dying Breed" by Jody Dwyer and "When a Stranger Calls" by Fred Walton. Genre is a useful method for analyzing films because it establishes what angle the film is taking, the plot of the story and how it makes the audience understand the moral of the film that is visually shown. Significantly, in “Dying Breed,” the type of genre that this film is categorized into is horror. Horror is an important genre in which it presents films in a scary and gruesome way. The main preview of “Dying Breed” is a group of hikers searching for a Tasmanian tiger. While searching for a Tasmanian tiger, the group of hikers encounter a family of cannibals who are on a mission to find fresh breeding stock to eat. Throughout the film we experience a constant movement of unexpected and detailed images. Lowry, in his article, states that "the viewer's relationship to a horror film is often very active – screaming, covering their eyes, and laughing nervously or derisively" (1984, p. 15). "Dying Breed" obviously displays this exact description to the audience in the sequence of events created...... middle of paper ...... a narrative understandable to the audience. In short, a film cannot have a narrative to construct without a particular type of genre. Every film needs a genre to distinguish the narrative. Overall, as this discussion of “Dying Breed” and “When a Stranger Calls” shows, genre is an important method in how a film is analyzed. The target audience and narrative flow evoked for both films demonstrate a deep understanding towards the viewer in relation to the structural analysis of the film. By having a genre in a film, it makes it easier to categorize the film and the film industry; this helps the public in their choice of viewing the film to see. It is important to understand that within the film industry, if a film does not have a genre; a target audience and narrative would not be as important to analyze.
