Many people believe that doctors should not prescribe any medication that ends a person's life because it is considered against the Hippocratic Oath. The Hippocratic Oath states that doctors have a professional obligation to save lives. Some consider euthanasia immoral and others say it is murder. Euthanasia should be legalized because it provides a means of relieving pain, provides relief to a person when their quality of life is low, eases the economic burden, and is simply a personal choice. Euthanasia is considered a method of anticipating death with less pain. and suffering. There are two main types of euthanasia, active euthanasia and passive euthanasia, which can be voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary active euthanasia occurs when a physician accepts “the rational request of a sufficiently informed and competent patient to be killed” (Gert). In this case, a doctor injects the patient with a lethal dose of medication, most often pentobarbital sodium, to end the patient's life. On the other hand, active involuntary euthanasia consists of killing the patient with the same means of voluntary euthanasia, but without the patient's request. In contrast, voluntary passive euthanasia occurs when a patient requests not to receive the medications or treatment they need to stay alive.
