Essay / The Evil Characters of The Scarlet Letter - 842
The Scarlet Letter, a book about sin and guilt, reveals two characters so purely evil that it is hard to believe such characters could be created --- Roger Chillingworth and Mistress Hibbins. Chillingworth and Hibbins may seem like good people, but they actually symbolize evil. Roger Chillingworth is the elderly husband of HesterPrynne, who is shunned by the entire colony of Boston, Massachusetts, for the sin of adultery she committed with the town's famous minister. The residents of the colony regard Chillingworth as a friendly doctor sent by God to restore health to people like Arthur Dimmesdale, the town's famous minister. However, as the book progresses, it becomes known as something completely different. Chillingworth is a person driven by revenge and determined to find out who the father of Hester's daughter is. One particular scene reveals this, as Chillingworth tries to give Hester a prescription to help her sleep and Hester accuses him of trying to kill her: “Do you know me so little, Hester Prynne? Is my goal so superficial? Even if I imagine a plan of revenge, what could I do better for my goal than to let you live? (Hawthorne p.50) Chillingworth says that because of Hester's sin, she is avoided by everyone and that the shame will stay with her and haunt her for the rest of her life. Every day of her life is full of suffering and Chillingworth wants her to live in such a way that he can suffer in the worst way possible, which is to let her live. Additionally, Chillingworth says, “I will feel myself shivering, suddenly and without realizing it. Sooner or later he will have to be mine! (p. 52) Her desire for revenge is so powerful that the soul of Hester's lover will belong to her forever. In the same... middle of paper ...... symbolizes "The Black Man". Chillingworth isn't the only one with a bad mind. Mistress Hibbins is known for riding horses with the "black man" in the forest because of his sinister ways---that of a witch. Mistress Hibbins and Chillingworth were expected to be good people, but they turned out to be the most hideous characters in The Scarlet Letter. Although Roger Chillingworth's appearance started out as a kind and friendly doctor, he was so evil and motivated by revenge. that it transformed his mind into something horrible. Although Mistress Hibbins was the sister of such an important person who loved God, she was basically the wicked witch from "The BlackMan". Therefore, people are not always what they seem and even if the people around them are fair, that doesn't mean they will be. Works Cited The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne
