I want them to think about real life experience, but not always taking the same examples from textbooks. Given my professional experience, I provide examples from my personal experience and what I have learned from my previous dealings with various world leaders. Additionally, my students learn argumentation skills not only in person, but also in writing via an online discussion forum when they are not in class. In addition to reading, students have the ability to access course materials posted on Blackboard a week in advance. I believe having materials available early helps them participate in class by asking questions or making comments. Interacting with individual students is part of my classroom strategy. I strive to respond to all students' emails within 24 hours. I believe this strategy builds trust between the student and instructor. My students feel that I care about their studies and their success. I often send email reminders for upcoming assignment deadlines. Keeping communication flowing is the engine of success. As students have different backgrounds and interests, I try to accommodate my schedule to meet with students if they need it in person.
