  • Essay / Power and Corruption in 1984 - 627

1984 by George Orwell was written in the past but seems to show very interesting parallels with some societies today. Orwell explains many important issues throughout the book that his main characters attempt to overcome. It shows how surveillance can easily corrupt those in control and how those in control are corrupted by the amount of power. Those in power control society and dominate everyone below. The novel shows what could potentially happen to our current society if power ultimately leads to corruption. In Oceana's society, those who control power are those who control the past, present, and future. The society of 1984 could be seen as an example of our future society once those in power are corrupted. Orwell describes in detail the concept of surveillance and how it affects the lives of citizens. In today's societies around the world, there is already massive surveillance. Our use of technology plays a big role in our surveillance. With webcams built into almost every computer, people can be observed and monitored without knowing it. Internet searches are monitored because certain keywords arouse suspicion and then lead to careful surveillance of the person. In 1984, the similarities between our current society and that of Océana are striking. For Oceana, telescreens can be considered today's webcams, as they monitor, listen and record everything they are able to capture. This has already happened in North Korea. North Korea could be described as a dystopian society. For all its citizens, the Internet is heavily monitored and restricted, allowing only limited access. "One might assume that it is more propaganda about the count...... middle of paper...... the art of society as a whole and that it has greater power thanks to the support given to the party, while those who believe the opposite are less powerful because their support is much less and limited. Orwell shows how those who do not comply will eventually be overthrown by those in power and that there is little anyone can do about it. Those who believed in change and tried to change society ended up failing when the majority rules, those with more power will defeat the weak and succeed. Works Cited Wilcox, Cody and Cody Bahler.
