Essay / Symbolism in a Worn Path by Eudora Welty - 1341
In the short story “A Worn Path” the author uses symbolism throughout the short story, symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities . Symbolism is the part of the story that is not so literal, it is the part of the story where you have to use your mind to find it, sometimes it can be very difficult but most of the time it is really easy. In some stories there are many, but in others not many. As in our short story, A Worn Path by Eudora Welty, there are many. This short story is about an old black lady, whose name is Phoenix Jackson, who makes sacrifices, for her grandson, she has to go to Natchez, which is a city far from where Phoenix Jackson lives. She goes there to get medicine for her grandson. This lady had to face many obstacles on her way, like falling into a ditch, and she blamed herself for falling, but it was actually a dog that made her fall in, she had needed help but no one helped her until the white hunter came to help her, he didn't think she had a good reason for her to go to town so he told her to going back, but she said she had to go for something important, then she saw a penny in the ground that it was probably the white hunter's, she figured it out when the white hunter got distracted , then the white hunter pointed his gun at her, she was not afraid so the white hunter respected that and he said if he had a penny he should have given it to her” (Welty 1278), this which was quite ironic because Phoenix had the penny and the white hunter didn't know it so it was like the white hunter gave him the penny. She had to cross a barbed wire fence, she had to cross a creek, and if she had fallen on the creek she could have died because I... middle of paper...... through him.
