Essay / Anthem - 832
Imagine a society where everyone is forced to be equal. Everyone's life is controlled by a totalitarian government. Basic human rights are non-existent. This society is in the novel Anthem, a post-apocalyptic dystopian novel. The author, Ayn Rand, has insightful insights into the social structure of government and human society. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521, has no specified name or exceptional appearance. Besides his face, his serial number “Equality 7-2521” was his only identification. He was gifted with great intelligence, but his curiosity for science and technology was condemned by the school. By great coincidence, the Equality 7-2521 “sweeper” discovered an old subway tunnel. He made terrible innovations inside the tunnel, but they were not accepted. Then, forced by society's hatred, he fled into the forest and founded his own company. In Anthem, Rand captively expressed the theme of objectivism, depicted evil within the totalitarian government, and provided an unusual setting. The philosophy of Objectivism is the main theme of the story. It interprets the reason for human existence and the impacts of an individual's knowledge on the group. After being convinced that there is no faith in collectivist society, Equality 7-2521 decided to think for himself and attempt to build his own society. But this action proved to be of great benefit to humanity. “We will never leave this house,” we said, “and we will never let it take us.” This is our home, we said, and let’s not let it be taken from us. This is our home and the end of our journey. This is your house, Golden One, and ours, and it belongs to no other man up to the ear...... middle of paper ......quality 7-2521 will not be curious innovation and invention; without the remains of the subway tunnel, he would never discover the revolutionary light bulbs; Without the existence of the abandoned house from the previous civilization, he would never have built the new society. With these techniques, Rand makes the post-apocalyptic setting one of the parts that excites readers the most. Elements of objectivism, dystopia, and post-apocalypse surround the novel. Ayn Rand carefully explains her philosophy of Objectivism throughout the book. Its carefully illustrated post-apocalyptic keeps readers turning the page. His remarkable and exaggerated depiction of government in the book gives readers a clear view of totalitarian and collectivist government. Ayn Rand, the author of this great novel, deserves to be crowned the best writer of her time.
