  • Essay / The Digital Divide: A Problem for Third World Problems

The Digital DivideIn 1966, the world was introduced to a television series called "Star Trek", created by Gene Roddenberry, depicting a fantastic technology that all members of planet Earth knew. of. The characters in the TV show used innovative tools such as Telepresense, Communicators, Phasers and Universal Translators. In modern society, these tools are used all over the world, but they are called video conferencing, cell phones, tasers, and voice recognition software, respectively. Another thing that was implemented in the series was that the inhabitants of planet Earth all shared the knowledge of this technology. But today, that is not the case. The technology of using computers and the Internet is only taught in certain parts of the world today. The area where technology has not been implemented is known as the digital divide. The digital divide is a term used to determine which parts of the world have access to the Internet and computer technology and which do not. I believe that this division or divide among the people of Earth is not good for the future success of our planet. Non-industrialized countries living in poverty are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning computer technology. The digital divide therefore constitutes a problem for third world countries. The level of education is lower in countries that do not have access to the Internet and computer technology. Vital educational information exists on the Internet to help students learn. Irene Lui, a public relations student at the College of Journalism and Communication, wrote in an article titled "The Internet Has Many Benefits": "Not only can [students] communicate with international students, but they can also gain benefit from the knowledge and experiences of others. , participate in discussion forums, share...... middle of paper ......
